Background of the Study

The proliferation of fake news poses significant challenges to organizations, particularly in maintaining trust and credibility. Corporate communication serves as a critical tool in countering misinformation, providing factual and timely responses to restore public confidence. In Barde Local Government Area (LGA) of Gombe State, the spread of fake news through social media and traditional channels has heightened the need for robust communication strategies. Recent studies (Ali & Suleiman, 2023; Garba et al., 2024) highlight that effective corporate communication can mitigate the impact of fake news by fostering transparency, engaging stakeholders, and promoting media literacy. However, organizations in Barde often lack structured approaches to address fake news, leaving them vulnerable to reputational damage. This study examines the role of corporate communication in countering fake news, focusing on its effectiveness in Barde.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Fake news continues to undermine organizational credibility, erode public trust, and exacerbate communication crises. In Barde LGA, the rapid dissemination of misinformation is compounded by limited media literacy and inadequate fact-checking mechanisms. Ali and Suleiman (2023) argue that organizations in Barde face challenges such as delayed responses, ineffective messaging, and lack of collaboration with media outlets in addressing fake news. This study seeks to bridge the knowledge gap by exploring how corporate communication strategies can be leveraged to counter fake news effectively in Barde.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study highlights the critical role of corporate communication in countering fake news, particularly in Barde LGA. By addressing the challenges and opportunities of combating misinformation, the research provides practical insights for communication practitioners, policymakers, and media outlets. The findings underscore the importance of transparency, proactive messaging, and media literacy in mitigating the impact of fake news. Furthermore, the study contributes to the broader discourse on information integrity and trust in digital communication.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study is limited to Barde LGA in Gombe State, focusing on the impact of corporate communication on countering fake news. It excludes other forms of misinformation and LGAs outside Barde.
